Once upon a time ...

Mother Nature and history foil plans for City Championship series. The Elks took the Pat Kidney League while in the Moose League, Staddle Hill and St. Sebastian each won a regular season round. They met in a three game playoff that took almost two weeks to complete due to rainy weather and Middletown's Tricentennial Celebration. Staddle Hill won the playdown series 2 games to 1, but by this late day (Sept. 18), it was decided cancel the City Series.

By this time, Connecticut had 45 sanctioned Little League programs. In order to move into the State Tournament a team now had to win its district. The Middlesex County Tournament had teams from the Pat Kidney League, Moose League, East Hampton, Cromwell, Portland, Coginchaug, Old Saybrook and Deep River-Chester.

Pat Kidney opened up with a 17-2 rout of Cromwell. Bob Sienko pitched the first three innings. He struck out all nine batters he faced. Jerome Byrd posted the final three giving up two hits and fanning seven. Dick Raicik had four hits. Bob Sienko and Ed Feitel and Walt Smigel each added two hits apiece.

Kenny Fredericks pitched a one hit, ten strikeout shutout of East Hampton for the Moose All Stars 18-0. Moose had a 17 hit attack featuring four home runs. Jack Cartelli had two roundtrippers and John Wilson and Joe Scirpo one apiece. Scirpo and Wally Cahill each had three hits.

In the semifinal Moose met Pat Kidney. Pat Kidney prevailed 5-1. Bcb Sienko threw a two hitter for the win. Sienko fanned 12 and walked one. Both Moose hits were by Kenny Fredericks. Bernie Wilson had two hits for Pat Kidney.

In the championship game Pat Kidney trounced Old Saybrook 12-0. Bob Sienko threw a one hitter. He struck out 13 and walked three. Jerry Garvin homered. Gene Vereen and Frank Lentini each had two hits.

At the conclusion of the district championship game, former New York Yankee pitcher,and later Hall of Famer, Lefty Gomez presented individual medals to members of both teams. In addition, Gomez presented the championship trophy to Pat Kidney manager Frank Kalinowski.

The Connecticut State Little League tournament takes place in Middletown. In the tournament, Pat Kidney loses to East Hartford 4-0 before a crowd of over 1,100 at Municipal Field. Gene Vereen had three hits. Bobby Sienko and Jay Byrd pitched for Pat Kidney.

Bridgeport repeats as the State Champions with a 2-0 victory over Meriden before 4,500 fans at Municipal Field. Bridgeport's John Lewis threw a three-hitter while striking out 13 and Ken Samu accounted for all the scoring with a third inning homer.
