Once upon a time ...

South Farms won the title two games to one over the Elks. Elks won game one 5-1 behind Lee Vereen.

Game Two was won by South Farms 10-2. South Farms was led by two hits each from Jim Cochran, Allen Wamester, Carl Morello, and Dick Wamester. Dick Wamester winning pitcher.

South Farms won the deciding game 8-4. Allen Wamester relieved his bother Dick to preserve the win. Allen Wamester had a three run homer. Gus Bidwell homered for the Elks.

District One Tournament
The Pat Kidney All Stars captured the District One All Star Tournament. In their opening contest Pat Kidney defeated East Hampton 10-6. Lee Vereen was the winning pitcher. He yielded 11 hits, walked three and fanned five. Bystrek was the losing hurler. Pat Kidney had ten hits. Joe Louis Davis had three hits. Lawrence Black, Earl Hutchings, and John Strathan each had two hits.

The Moose All Stars opened up with an 8-6 victory over the CDE All Stars. Dick Wamester was the winning pitcher. He gave up eight hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Alan Wamester had two hits. George Carlson hit a three run homer for CDE and had two hits. CDE also had two hits each from Dick Koritkowski and Duane Fresia.

In the semifinal game Pat Kidney shutout Colchester 12-0. Jack Welsh was the winning pitcher. He surrendered five hits. He struckout four and did not issue a free pass. Bernie Cooper and Bernie Wilson each had three hits.

In the other semifinal game Portland eliminated the Moose Stars 13-6. Ed Sadlowski was the winning pitcher with relief help from John Pasquarelli. Paul Gasparelli, Jim Quinn and Alan Wamester hurled for Moose. Fred Kesten and Joel Swanson each had two hits fro Moose. Swanson homered. Dave Umba and Ed Sadlowski each had three hits for Portland. Dick LaPlant added two hits for the winners.

Pat Kidney defeated Portland 5-2 at Sudan Park to capture the District One title. Lee Vereen was the winning pitcher throwing a five hitter. He walked one and struck out five. Pat Kidney scored four times in the third. John Stratham hit a ground rule double to drive in first run. Bernie Wilson hit a bases loaded double to drive in three more. Wilson had two hits.

The Connecticut State Little League tournament takes place in Middletown for the third straight year. The Pat Kidney All Stars are eliminated by Hartford 12-2 at Sudano Park. Middletown used three pitchers, Jack Welsh, Aaron Wise, and Joe Davis. Welsh walked five batters and was replaced by Wise. He gave up two hits and Hartford had a six run fourth and a 9-2 lead. Pat Kidney was led offensively by leadoff batter John Stratham with two hits. He singled and scored in the first and homered in the second.

Stamford wins the State Championship with a 3-0 win over Hartford at Sudano Park before 1,500 fans. They next defeat Westerly, RI to advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. By defeating Port Allegheny, PA (4-2), Fairmont, WV (11-0) and North Austin, TX (3-0), Stamford becomes the first team from Connecticut to win the Little League World Series.

1951 The Ahern Whalen All Star team played in the National Junior Baseball Tournament held at Seaside Village Field in Bridgeport, CT. The games were played over the weekend of August 31-September 2, 1951.

Team members of the All Star team were Jim Grant,Joe Romano, Guy Carta,Paul Scirpo,Dave Darling,Dean Patenaude,Bill Dineen, Joe Hartigan, Gene Vereen, Junior Salonia,Tommy Barrett, Ed Counter, Kenny Fredericks and Sebastian Spada.

The team was managed by Bernie Masztal and he was assisted by Gene Pehota.

Game One. Friday, August 31, 1951
Paul Scirpo pitched Middletown to an 8-3 victory over the team from Williamsport,Pennsylvania. Scirpo pitched a no hitter for the first four innings as his teammates built a 6-0 lead after four frames. Scirpo struck out nine and walked four. Middletown scored one in the first by taking advantages of walks and errors. Gene Vereen scored the run. In the third Middletown scored two more. With the bases loaded and two out Eddie Counter singled to drive in the two runs. His hit scored Tommy Barrett and Gene Vereen. In the fourth Middletown added three runs. Gene Vereen doubled to left center scoring Dave Darling and Joe Romano. Verren scored on a wild pitch. Dave Darling homered to left in the fifth. Williamsport had a two run homer in the sixth from Joe Judd. In the seventh Ben Gair hit a solo homer.

Game Two. Saturday, September 1, 1951
Middletown edged Waterbury 2-1 to adavance to the championship game. Ken Fredericks pitched the first six innings. He gave up three hits, walked four and fanned seven. Paul Scirpo pitched a hitless seventh. He struck out one. In the bottom of the seventh with the score tied at 1-1, Guy Carta singled and Paul Scirpo walked. Eddie Counter singled to right plating Carta with the game winner.

Game Three. Sunday, September 2, 1951 - Championship Game
Bridgeport took advantage of a Middletown error in the fourth inning to score four unearned runs to break a 3-3 tie and go ahead 7-3. Bridgeport added two in the seventh and won the game 9-3.

Middletown had eight hits,three by Guy Carta. One of his hits was a double. Middletown used three pitchers. Cliff Carlson,Paul Scirpo, and Bill Dineen. The winning pitcher for Bridgeport was John Bruzas. Bridgeport Middletown

At the conclusion of the game manager Bernie Masztal accepted the runner-up trophy.
