Once upon a time ...

VFW completed a perfect 18-0 season in the Moose League, while the Merchants took the Pat Kidney title and EIS defeated the Gold Seals in the O'Rourke playoffs. In the playdown game, the Merchants beat EIS 5-4 in an eight inning game that takes two nights to complete. But VFW completes its perfect season by beating the Merchants 1-0 in the city title game. Bill Vasiliou pitched a no-hitter, with 15 Ks and 2 BBs, and lost as Marshall Goldberg walked, stole second and scored on an error in the fourth inning. Orlando Casserino and Gary Cyranowicz pitched for VFW.

Joe Ciccarello of VFW and the Moose All Stars led all of Little League with a .540 batting average. Mark DeJohn won the O'Rourke batting title over Bruce Spaman .481 to .480.

District Nine Tournament
Guilford nipped the Bernie O'Rourke All Stars 3-2. Bobby Hyman hurled a four hitter for O'Rourke. Hyman walked two and struckout ten. Hyman and Mark DeJohn each had two hits for O'Rourke. Other players with hits were Terry Anderson, Billy Montanile and Bruce Spaman.

In a fine pitching duel Clinton edged Moose 2-1. Steve Brown of Clinton pitched a three hitter striking out nine and walking four. John Ruffino of Moose threw a four hitter walked no one and struck out five. Ed McCarthy's fourth inning homer for Clinton turned out to be the game winner.

Billy Vasiliou pitched a five hitter and fanned fourteen batters and walked two to lead Pat Kidney to a 5-3 won over Higganum. Andy Chiavarallo had three doubles and Billy Vasiliou had two hits. Dave Gannon homered for Higganum.

Pat Kidney used a fourteen hit attack to defeat CDE 12-7. Ron Herringshaw's three run homer highlighted a five run top of the first. Ron Herringshaw and Ted Bartosiak pitched for Pat Kidney. Andy Chiavarallo and Billy Vasiliou each had three hits. Pat Patnaude and Ted Bartosiak each added two hits.

Billy Vasiliou pitched a three hitter to lead Pat Kidney to an 8-3 win over Madison in a semifinal contest. He struck out twelve and walked one. Vasiliou, Ron Herringshaw and Don Perkins each had two hits. Herringshaw homered.

East Hampton edged Pat Kidney in the District Nine title game 9-7 at Hubbard Park. Andy Chiavarallo and Ted Bartosiak each had two hits to pace the Pat Kidney offense. Chiavarallo pitched the first three frames. Bartosiak hurled the final two innings and was charged with the loss. Rich Barber had two home runs foe East Hampton. East Hampton employed atrio of pitchers. Jim Bartlett, Doug Rittman and Ed Langevin workedfor the winners.Rittman was credited with the win.
