Once upon a time ...

In the first round Westfield Fire Department defeated the Elks 8-6 at Westfield. WFD and Elks each had one hit. The game featured a combined 27 walks. WFD pitched Sweeney and Carey. The Elks used Banks, Kolenda, and Tobias.

At Snow, Kiwanis downed Rotary 22-11. Kiwanis slammed out 17 hits while limiting Rotary to four. Rotary pitched Herb Laflin. Kiwanis used the combination of Arnold Steadham, Jay Hickey, and Mike Pellerin. Tom Pellerin, Jay Hickey, Dave Nemeth, and Robby Marino each had three hits and Phil Murphy two for Kiwanis.

In the title game at Hubbard Kiwanis trounced WFD 15-4. Mike Pellerin hurled a three hitter and struck out 11 Mike Coleman, Phil Cyrulik, and Tom Sweeney pitched for WFD. Phil Murphy had three hits and Dave Nemeth two. Robby Marino homered. WFD had a two run homer from Sweeney in the sixth. Murphy would later play football at North Carolina State and in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams.

District Nine Tournament
Brian Dayette pitched a one hitter to lead CDE to a 7-0 victory over the Westfield All Stars. Dayette walked two and struck out 12 Matt Vernali singled to spoil Dayette's no hit bid.

Brian Dayette later played in the Major Leagues for the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs. He is shown here in his 1986 Topps card.

East Hampton defeated Pat Kidney 2-1 in East Hampton. Dickerson pitched for East Hampton and hurled a two hitter. He struck out 12 and walked two. Dave Jarzabek pitched for Pat Kidney. He gave up seven hits no walks and struck out three. Calvin Hart hit a first inning homerun for Pat Kidney. The other hit was a third inning single by Dan Jarzabek.

Portland used the long ball to take care of Moose 15-6 Portland got homeruns from Mathew Wolman and Frank Romanek. Wolman and John Willmore pitched for Portland. Moose used Wilkins and Mike Pellerin on the mound. Gillis Liljedahl led Moose with three hits including a homerun.

The Bernie O'Rourke All Stars used an eight run fifth inning to defeat Clinton 13-10. O'Rourke had a grand slam from Gary Behm and six RBIs. Jeff Solek hit a triple in the fifth to drive in the winning runs. Jim Satagaj and Gary Behm each had two hits. The O'Rourke pitching was split between Bob Heizman, Tom Walsh and Harold Sperazza.

John Hagel single in the fifth inning drove in the winning run as Cromwell defeated Bernie O'Rourke 3-2. Hagel was the winning pitcher. Herb Laflin pitched the game for O'Rourke allowing five hits. Russo had three hits and Jeff Solek two hits.
