Once upon a time ...

The Elks won the first round game with a 6-3 over the Lions. Pete Tomczak was the winning pltcher. He limited the Llons to two hits. Hits by Mark Fortuna and Glen Manemeit.

In the second round the Elks stopped Westfield Fire Dept. 4-3 and Exchange defeated Bob's Surplus 9-4. It took seven innings for the Elks to win, They used the pitching of Joe Kolenda and Mike Cimino to stop WFD. Mike Emard and Bobby Moore pitched for WFD. Moody scored on Kolenda's single to win for Elks. Exchange won their game in eight innings. After six it was a 2-2 tie. Both teams scored two in the seventh before the Exchange had a five run eighth. Campbell homered for Bob's. Musemeci homered for Exchange.

In the title game Elks defeated Exchange 5-3 in seven innings. Pete Tomczak, in relief of Mike Cimino, got the win.

District Nine Tournament
1972 was perhaps the greatest year of Little League baseball for Middletown in District Nine play. When only four teams remained they were all from Middletown.

Bernie O'Rourke All Stars edged Middlefield 5-4. Randy Whitehead was the winning pitcher. John McCracken had three hits while Scott Peters, Jeff Drenzek and Carl Manemeit each had a pair of hits.

Al Marshall pitched a three hitter and Moose defeated the defending District Nine champions Clinton 4-2. Al Marshall had a double in the fifth inning as Moose scored three runs.

Pat Kidney unleashed a nine hit attack to drop Guilford 12-3. Tony Gaunichaux had two home runs and a double to drive in five runs. Hubbard had two hits. Larry Liedke pitched the first four innings and Mike Cimino finished up the game.

East Haddam-Moodus scored five runs in the fifth to edge Spencer 5-4. Jamie Knight was the Spencer pitcher. Kostoss picked up the win. Schmittberger of EH Moodus only player on either side to have more than one hit. He hit a two run homer in the fifth.

Mike Drysgula's two run homer in the fourth lifted the Westfield All Stars to a 6-4 win over Portland. Westfield was led by two hits each from Pat O'Leary, Steve Rowe, and Drysgula. Steve Rowe was the winning pitcher.

Middletown's Moose All Stars defeated CDE 5-3 behind the strong pitching of Billy Russo. Russo gave up only three hits and carried a one hitter into the sixth. Moose bunched all their scoring in the second using two walks and four hits to tally five times.

Bernie O'Rourke took advantage of twelve hits, eleven walks, eight stolen bases, a hit batter, seven wild pitches, four passed balls to hammer East Haddam-Moodus 17-3. John McCracken was the winning pitcher. He gave up seven hits but walked no one. He had six strikeouts. Eleven of the twelve O'Rourke players had a hit. Wayne Patenaude had a three run homer in drove in four runs. Billy Nedobity drove in three runs and Whitehead two.

Westfield used the pitching of Joe Vasiliauskas to defeat East Hampton 6-5. Westfield had two hits each from Mike Drysgula and Pat O'Leary.

Pat Kidney went to Durham and came back with a 5-1 win to make it an all Middletown semifinal. Pete Tomczak pitched a four hitter. He walked three and struck out 14. In fact he struck out 11 of the first 14 batters he faced. Pat Kidney had two hits each from Joe Kolenda and Tony Gaunichaux. Tomczak had a double for Pat Kidney. This win set up the semi final matchups of Bernie O'Rourke playing Pat Kidney on Romegialli and Westfield facing Moose on Baroni.

The Moose All Stars received no hit pitching from Al Marshall for five innings and a two run homer from Dave Onorati in the first inning to shutout the Westfield All Stars 4-0. Marshall retired the first 14 batters he faced. After a rough first inning, Mark Baker settled down and only allowed two hits the rest of the game. Marshall was only player to get two hits.

The Bernie O'Rourke All Stars scored three times in the fifth to edged the Pat Kidney All Stars 3-2 and move into the finals. In the fifth with one out Bobby Satagaj singled and Manemeit reached on an error. Wayne Patenaude doubled to drive in a run. Gene Scalesse then double to send two runs across the plate. Those were the only three hits given up by Larry Liedke. Pat Kidney scored in the second when Mike Cimino singled scored Pete Tomczak. In the third Sarcia singled in Liedke. Tomczak and Sarcia each had two hits for Pat Kidney.

The Moose All Stars stopped the Bernie O'Rourke All Stars 7-2 to capture the District Nine championship at Snow School. Billy Tynan's three run homer in the fourth was the key hit of the game. Billy Russo was the winning pitcher. He struck out four walked one and held O'Rourke to four hits. Bobby Satagaj had two hits for O'Rourke. Tynan and Bafumi had two hits for Moose.

In the State Tournament Moose was defeated by Orange 14-4. Orange had seventeen hits and Moose four. Billy Russo started for Moose but was ineffective and was relieved by Scianna. Dave Onorati had two of the Moose hits.
