Once upon a time ...

The opening round game had Rotary defeating Didato's 15-0. Mike Warley pitched the shutout and also homered. Billy Buckie went four for four. Shawn Donovan and Walter Jackson added two hits each for Rotary. Billy Wilson and Sebbie Annino led Didato's with two hits apiece.

In the second round the Knights of Columbus edged Met Life 7-6. The Knights had a three run homer from Tom Cartelli. Peter Rixon had two doubles and Mike Cartelli had two hits. Tom Cartelli and Don Flis combined to pitch a four hitter.

In the other game Rotary outslugged Kiwanis 16-11. Rotary was led by four hits from Shawn Donovan and Mike Warley. Billy Buckie had three hits. Walter Jackson was the winning pitcher. Bafumi had three hits for Kiwanis.

Dave Church pitched a five hitter to lead the Knights of Columbus to the city championship with a 7-2 win over Rotary. Mike Warley was losing pitcher. Tom Cartelli had a three run homer and Dave Church had two hits. Dom Cerritelli also had two KofC hits. Walter Jackson had two hits for Rotary.

District Nine Tournament
Middletown had four of its Leagues serving as host sites for the first round of the 1976 District Nine Tournament.

Billy Rule pitched a one hitter to lead Westfield to an 8-0 win over Killingworth at Moody Field. Rule walked one and struck out nine. Rule also hit a two run homer.

Cromwell defeated the Moose All Stars 4-1 at Hubbard Park. Cromwell scored early against Ricky Romano and made the early runs hold up.

Danny Pagano recorded 11 strikeouts as Spencer defeated Middlefield 5-2 at Lawrence School. Pagano and Faraci homered for Spencer. Pagano, Faraci, Galligan, and Sergi each had two hits for Spencer.

A clutch double by Mark Scalesse in the third inning keyed a two run third and carried Bernie O'Rourke to a 4-0 win over the Pat Kidney All Stars at Snow School. Mark Ouellette had two hits for the O'Rourke Stars. The O'Rourke RBIs came from Scalesse, Mike Mandeville, Skip Jackson and Ouellette.

These results set up the following matchups. Bernie O'Rourke at Cromwell and Spencer against Westfield at Moody School.

Westfield had 13 hits and three home runs and defeated Spencer 11-4 at Moody. Dave Peterson had four hits. Billy Rule, Tom Cartelli, and Dom Ceritelli all homered. The Rule brothers, Billy and Jay, each had two hits as did Jack Burns. Jay Rule was the winning pitcher and Charles Hickey was the losing hurler.

The Bernie O'Rourke All Stars behind the pitching of Mike Mandeville beat Cromwell 8-4 in Rosetown. He hurled a five hitter. Greg Pitruzello led O'Rourke with two hits.

The semi finals featured Westfield meeting Bernie O'Rourke and Guilford facing Madison. Mike Warley bested Billy Rule as Bernie O'Rourke defeated Westfield 5-2. Warley pitched a four hitter while striking out eight. He walked one and hit one. Rule gave up nine hits, walked one and had an impressive 11 strikeouts. In third Skip Jackson and Shawn Donovan singled. Greg Pitruzello the homered to give the O'Rourke a 3-1 lead which Warley protected. In the fifth Glen Nedobity got a hit and was singled in by Jackson. Pitruzello hit scored Jackson to make it 5-2. Jackson, Nedobity and Pitruzello all had two hits.

Guilford pounded Madison 17-8 to set up their meeting with the Bernie O'Rourke All Stars.

Bernie O'Rourke All Stars left nine men on base in the first three innings and twelve in the game and lost to Guilford 6-1 in the District Nine Championship game in Guilford. By contast Guilford left only three runners on base. Bernie O'Rourke had four hits two each by Glen Nedobity and Greg Pitruzello. Mike Mandeville of O'Rourke gave up six hits walking two and striking out four. Benton had a two run homer for Guilford in the fourth.
