THE SCOREBOARD

The new LED scoreboard at Palmer Field is terrific. The man in charge of the graphics and messages -- and who is trying his best to teach me how to do the simple things -- is Steve Lesiczka.

The Middletown High (Class of 2003) and University of New Haven alumnus designs and coordinates the graphics with the PA announcements and the goings-on on the field. It's pretty cool when a home run is hit to watch the board come alive with its animated home run video.

Similarly, when the concession stand announcement is made, hot dogs, burgers, pretzels and the like appear on the board. Maybe the best thing is when a kid's name is announced, Lesiczka is right there with the kid's picture and name on the board. Cool stuff.

Lesiczka is the guy who does all of that and he's first rate. I'm the guy who messes up the count and outs. But in my defense -- hey, call it an excuse -- the press box during a tournament a nutty place and while I know I'm not the brightest bulb in the house, this board is a tad complicated. Press the wrong key and Lesiczka has to come to my rescue.

He's done that many times the past week. But know what? The city got this one right; it's a great scoreboard.
